10 Steps To Have An At-Home Yoga Retreat

Feeling frazzled and in need of a yoga retreat – but an exotic getaway is not in the budget? An at-home yoga retreat can provide nearly all the benefits of a destination retreat! And without the cost and headache of travel! In fact, creating a yoga retreat at home is a novel way to revitalize your body, renew your mind, and refresh your spirit. The following 10 steps will help you set up your personal retreat.

10 Steps To Have An At-Home Yoga Retreat

Step 1: Wipe your calendar

Plan a weekend and preferably 3-4 days for your at-home retreat. And clear your schedule of other commitments, just as if you were leaving town. Make sure you rearrange or cancel any commitments so you aren’t interrupted from your Zen at all. Make it the same as if you were going on vacation, and make yourself unavailable to the outside world.

Step 2: Declutter your space and create your Yoga Sanctuary

In my post “DIY Yoga Sanctuary” I talked about detailed steps to create your a Home Yoga Space. Before you can transform your home into a personal retreat setting, you will need to tidy up. Sprucing up your space liberates energy and frees your attention for more meaningful projects. Read to learn how to create a home yoga space so that you can achieve that same sense of bliss you get in a destination retreat.

Step 3: Plan your meals

Before anything else, preparation is the key to success. That sentiment could not be more true when planning meals for your at-home yoga retreat. Consider your goals when planning meals. Do you want to experiment with raw vegetable smoothies or juices? Or would you prefer warm, nourishing foods? Decide ahead of time what you will eat for each meal and then head to the grocery store with list in hand. If you are not a big fan of cooking, look for a local juice bar or other healthy takeouts.

Step 4: Practice Morning and Night

Practicing twice a day ultimately takes you deeper into your practice. It’s a retreat, so feel free to be playful and mix it up! Explore a less familiar style of yoga. In one of your daily yoga sessions try to do something different. You can have one really active practice in the morning. And then you can be more meditative and introspective in the afternoon, working on alignment and therapeutics.

Step 5: Meditate

Free your mind from the roles, responsibilities, and cultural expectations that infuse your normal awareness. Find your real self through meditation. In the experience of your true self you can discover peace and joy. In my post “Best Yoga Music For Your Yoga Practice“, you will find a list of yoga and meditation music. The music will put your mind and body at complete peace, rejuvenating and nourishing your balance and harmony and restoring your vitality.

Step 6: Take time to write

Journaling is a method of processing the deeper aspects of your nature. Commit to journaling for at least 15 minutes a day. Write freely, without worrying about content, grammar, or penmanship. You may be surprised at what you discover. Besides journaling, you can also choose any type of writing, drawing, or art that allows you to express your feelings and emotions. Do whatever restores you.

Step 7: Read something inspiring

A retreat is a time to let go of things that no longer serve you in order to make room for the things that uplift you. In my post “My yoga bookshelf“, you will find a selection of my favorite yoga-related books. Then snuggle up with a warm cup of tea, a blanket, and a captivating read. Enjoy the time to give back to yourself. Check out My yoga bookshelf: Yoga Books Every Yogi Needs to Read.

Step 8: Take long walks

Having an at-home yoga retreat doesn’t mean that you have to stay indoor all the time. On the contrary, I recommend you spend a portion of time outdoor everyday. If you have access to local parks, beaches, trails or nature preserves, go to those places. While you’re there, find a quiet place to meditate or do a few yoga poses.

Step 9: Pamper yourself

An at-home yoga retreat should be nourishing to you on every level. Take time to pamper your body. Take a warm bath, give yourself a facial, or get a massage. Read my post “Pamper Yourself: Home Spa Ideas for Body and Soul“. With these steps and treatments, you’ll see how easy, affordable, and beneficial a little pampering can be. Treat yourself and make this at-home yoga retreat an ultimate experience of relaxation.

Step 10: Get extra rest

Plan to get sufficient rest, at least 8 hours a night, so that you’re truly refreshed when you emerge from your home retreat.

Tips: Unplug

When we disconnect from devices, we reconnect to ourselves, to nature, culture, and the community around us. When you are not forced to be on call for the world, you can begin to be on call for your soul. On your next at-home yoga retreat, try to disconnect from your phone, tablet, computer, and television. And you will find the pace of life seems to slow down exponentially. And of course, let your family and friends know ahead of time, so that they won’t be worried when they cannot reach you.

At-home yoga retreat can be planned solo, with a loved one, or with your best friend. After reading this post you may decide that an at-home yoga retreat is the best retreat option for you. Then, what are you waiting for? Go pencil in your upcoming retreat.
